It is reported that over two million dogs are bred and raised on several dog meat farms in South Korea. According to Kitty Block, Humane Society International’s CEO, they rescue lots of dogs from this trade; however, it is still unbelievable how anyone could allow dogs to endure such harsh conditions.
Recently, the Humane Society International saved 171 dogs from a dog meat trade in South Korea and brought them to the United States. All the dogs were inside small metal cages without proper sanitation, water, or food. And worse, diseases were rampant, with some of the dogs already dead inside their cages.
Most of the time, not so much thought is given to the dogs’ suffering and pain during the slaughtering process. They are hacked until they die, and this is in front of other dogs next in line.
It is such a chilling scene to imagine. Fortunately, there are organizations like the Humane Society International to help save these canines.
In some countries in Asia, people consume dog meat. However, it is most prevalent in South Korea, where there are thousands of dog meat farms providing distributors and restaurants with dog meat.
Thus far, the Humane Society has already saved more than 2000 dogs about to be slaughtered in South Korea. They have also initiated a program to help dog farm owners in South Korea get out of the business. This program will help decrease the number of dog meat suppliers.
It is not the first time that the Humane Society stepped in to rescue such lucky dogs. However, there are still more things to be done and more dogs to be rescued. But these rescue operations remind us that there is still hope and that we can still make a difference for these dogs.
