At first look, it would seem that a stray dog named Billy didn’t have a lot of time left. He was really so skinny, and his body was ravaged with mange. He virtually had no fur left, and this made his emaciated body seem to look even worse. It was a wonder that he could even still move around.
Someone felt sorry for him and took photos of the dog. Those sad pictures were then posted online. Thankfully, a devoted dog lover and rescuer found them, and that started his journey to a new and better life.
A dignified end
A Greek woman named Valia Orfanidou has always been a big supporter of the local shelters in Athens where she lives. She volunteers her time and also opens up her home to foster rescue dogs. She also follows dog rescue groups on social media to see if she can do anything to help.
One day, as she was looking through Facebook, she saw the post about Billy. She was stunned to see his condition and thought about helping him. Looking at the pictures, she determined that the poor dog was in a city 70 miles away from her hometown.
With the help of a friend, they took a train and searched for the homeless pooch. It didn’t take too long to find him.
When Valia finally saw the dog, her heart was completely broken. The kind animal lover had her doubts that the dog would survive. He was already very weak and had difficulties moving around.
Nevertheless, she took the dog with her. Even if he doesn’t last long, she wants to give the pooch a dignified end to his life.
Recovery and transformation
A trip to the vet came with good news. After doing some bloodwork, he said that Billy’s condition was still treatable. He prescribed some medication and instructions to give the dog regular treatments.
Valia was overjoyed with what she heard, and she vowed to do exactly what the vet said. She took Billy home and for the next two months, showered him with love and care. In that time, he progressed quickly, and he became healthier. The former stray pooch gained a lot of weight, and his mange disappeared.
His transformation caught the eye of a sweet woman living in Switzerland. She adopted him, and Billy now lives happily in his new home.
