Someone once said that sometimes, taking a wrong turn takes you to the right destination. And John Cassabria, an Amazon delivery man, found this to be true.
It was a regular workday for John as he was delivering packages in Woburn, Massachusetts. He made the mistake of turning down the wrong street, so he stopped his van to check on his navigation system. Then, his attention was caught by a sound coming from a nearby house.
In an interview, he said that the sound was something he has never heard in his life, the sound permeating over the beep of his van—and he couldn’t ignore it. The distressing sound came from inside a backyard, so the 24-year-old went out of his van and decided to investigate. When he saw what was going on behind the fence, he immediately took action.
A 14-year-old Siberian Husky named Luka was drowning in his family’s swimming pool, his head bobbing above the water. Cassabria climbed over the fence and jumped into the water to save the dog. He leaped in the pool with everything: phone, wallet and watch, but according to him, none of that mattered because the dog’s welfare was on top of his mind at that time.
When he was able to pull Luka to safety, he notified the Woburn Police Department.
The dog’s family was out of town that weekend for a vacation. The pet sitter they got has not yet arrived, and it appears that the dog made his way out of the pet flap then stumbled into the pool.
And as if saving the dog’s life wasn’t enough, Cassabria stayed with Luka for an hour and a half until his sitter arrived.
Julie Caldwell, the dog’s owner, says that Luka has used this doggy door for 14 years without incident but claims that if the young man wasn’t around, their dog couldn’t have survived for long. After all, Luka is already a senior dog who can’t swim and whose back legs are already failing.
When asked about his heroic deed, Cassabria humbly says that he just happened to be at the right place, at the right time. He further states that he would gladly repeat his actions over and over again if he had to.
