One of the most astonishing things about cops and firefighters is that their commitment to their job does not end when they clock out and go home. These heroes swore an oath to serve and protect the public, and they honor it whether they are on duty or not.
Tim Tawater is an excellent illustration of this. He put his life in danger around five years ago when he entered a burning house while he was not on duty.
Tim was going to a friend’s house in Nashville, Tennessee to attend a party when he noticed heavy smoke coming from a house. Tim, as a firefighter, couldn’t help but look into it. Firefighters, he said, are drawn to smoke in the same way that a dog is pulled to bones.
Tim noticed people gathered around the house, and when flames began to shoot out of the roof, he realized that it was certainly a fire.
Tim examined the house and discovered no one inside, but when he opened the front door, he was greeted by a large bouvier des Flandres, a fluffy Belgian herding dog. Tim tried to entice the dog out of the house, but it was terrified and panicking.
Tim had no choice but to do the unthinkable once he realized the dire circumstances. He walked inside and slammed the door shut. Onlookers were concerned for Tim since the roof of the house was going to collapse. Tim went out of the house with the puppy in his arms, wrapped in a large blanket, exactly 51 seconds later.
Tim got into his car and drove away after rescuing the puppy. People were astounded by this man’s selflessness.
The media was able to locate him a few days later. Tim explained that he did what he did to save the dog and not to draw attention to himself.
We could definitely use more folks like Tim in the world.
