For about six years, a rescue dog named Cleo has been to more than 30 adoption events. Unfortunately, adopters have continued to overlook her.
By now, the sweet pooch is an expert during meet-and-greets. However, that does not make it less disappointing when she remains without a family after each event.
Cleo’s foster mom, Vicky Ham, said the dog weighs about 80 pounds and is deaf, which is why potential adopters always look her over. Cleo receives lots of praises during adoption events, but that’s it.
Cleo was only a pup when she got rescued from a catastrophic flood in 2016. Ham started fostering her and didn’t realize her hearing condition at first. And that’s because Cleo has never let her lack of hearing get in her way.
According to Ham, the sole difference between a hearing dog and Cleo is that you have to look at Cleo when giving her a sign. She said the rescue dog responds to facial and body expressions, hand signs, and flashing lights.
Cleo previously thought that she had already found a forever family — twice. However, both times, the family returned her to the shelter after only a couple of months.
Ham said that Cleo is loving and sweet has tons of energy. The dog loves being outside and going on car rides and walks. When there is a visitor, she always grabs a toy and urges them to play with her.
Ham said it is hard to watch Cleo ignored during adoption events. She has taken care of her the best way she can and knows that the dog deserves a permanent family. Cleo deserves to be adopted by a family who doesn’t see her deafness as a drawback.
Ham added that the rescue dog is not afraid of fireworks or loud noises. So hopefully, this coming July 4th, she will already be with her forever family and watch the fireworks with them.
