The Montez family, who formerly lived in Boyd, Texas, got their terrier mix Corky from the Humane Society of North Texas more than ten years ago. Their children were immediately attracted to Corky when they went to the shelter to look for a dog to have as a pet.
The family loved the dog, so they ensured his safety and security in their home. Corky, despite these measures, fled from their gated backyard approximately four months after his arrival.
Since the terrier mix had a collar and a microchip, the Montezes were confident that they would soon locate the animal. They distributed leaflets, knocked on doors in their neighborhood, and visited local businesses to inquire about Corky.
The Montezes gradually lost hope that they would ever locate the terrier mix after six months had gone by without any clue of his whereabouts. They ultimately relocated to Fort Worth and were forced to live with the knowledge that Corky would forever be lost.
When the phone rang nearly seven years later, the Montezes were working in their yard. Mom Kimberly hurried inside to answer the phone and the message that she received stunned her.
She hurriedly returned outside and informed her husband Jimmy that the Humane Society of North Texas had Corky. The family could not believe the news and felt compelled to visit the shelter.
When they saw that it was, in fact, Corky, Kimberly, Jimmy, and their four children cried tears of joy. He was over seven years older and appeared exhausted, yet he was the same terrier mix they had adopted many years ago.
According to the employees at the Fort Worth animal shelter, a person discovered Corky along with two other canines by the side of a busy road. One was already dead as the victim of a car collision, but Corky and his other terrier friend were unharmed.
The other dog only had one functioning eye so the Humane Society called Corky’s friend Captain after Captain Hook. Nobody knew how long Corky and his canine companions were friends, but they shared an unbreakable friendship.
Therefore, the Montez family decided to adopt Captain as well. Kimberly and Jimmy now have four dogs and four children, but they wouldn’t change a thing.
