German shepherds are quite known for their loyalty and their watchfulness. They make excellent watchdogs, and the German shepherd named Bear is no exception.
Bear is a clever and alert dog, so when he noticed that his owner’s church was on fire he immediately went into action. Bear’s loud barks and howling prevented the church from burning down.
Bear saves the church
At about 12:45 AM, Bear’s owner Kim Lewis woke up to Bear’s howls and barking. She said that the Bear sounded alarmed, so she immediately sensed that something was wrong. When she opened her blinds, she saw that the church across the street was on fire. Fire spread across the roof and cross of the Yorktown Assembly of God church.
Kim called 911 and ran across the street to warn the administrators of the church. Fortunately, firefighters arrived after a few minutes and started to put out the fire. Bear’s barking and Kim’s quick reaction saved the church. The fire damaged the roof, but most of the 50-year old building was still intact.
The aftermath of the fire
Bear’s howling and barking saved the church. Thanks to Bear, the building still stands, so the church can continue to hold services while the owners repair the damaged roof. Lisa Wain, the church administrator, says that Bear stopped a devastating disaster. She says that because of this everyone in the church felt grateful and rewarded Bear with extra cuddles, toys, and treats as thanks.
Bear truly deserves praise because he saved this historic community building. However, the fire still damaged the church. The roof repairs cost tens of thousands of dollars, so the church asks for donations. Luckily, there are volunteers who want to repair the roof, even though it’s hard work.
