Young Puppy
Your puppy, less than 12 weeks, may not have the training to know where to relieve himself. The problem may be physical since puppies haven’t developed bowel or bladder control. Simply they just can’t hold it very long.

I Need To Go!!!
Adolescent And Mature Dogs
An older dog, six months or older, may still eliminate inside the house. There are many reasons and the location may be an indication of why. If you notice a specific surface, room or furniture it may indicate the smell of a person or another animal.
Level of House Training Completion
With a puppy or more mature dog, it’s vital to determine whether your dog has been completely housetrained. When not completely housebroken a dog may occasionally eliminate inside. Perhaps the dog doesn’t know how to ask to go outside. Don’t overlook medical complications as well.
Possible Medical Reasons
It’s important to know if there is a medical reason requiring a visit to the veterinarian when your dog defecates or urinates indoors or at inappropriate times. When you suspect something is medically wrong here are some common reasons that your vet can identify.
Incontinence
Incontinence is a medical condition where a dog voids or “leaks”. A dog may be unaware of the leakage, often during sleep. Several examples include a week sphincter, recent spay or other surgery, hormones, a UTI (urinary tract infection indicated by excessive licking of genitals), stones in the bladder, neurological problems, kidney disease, canine diabetes, Cushing’s disease, even genitalia abnormalities. Some medications can change control and elimination frequency. If you suspect any medical condition see our vet before attempting to resolve it with training.
Upset Stomach
Displaying gastrointestinal upset by diarrhea or loose stools. A schedule change, amount, and kind of food may also cause more frequent trips outside.
Aging
A complete bladder elimination or leak may occur around nine years or older with trained dogs. The possibility of loss of bladder or physical control, weakness, arthritis, or brain function may be the cause.
More Information
Scent Marking
When dogs urinate in the house it may be they are scent marking by urinating small amounts usually on a vertical surface. Most male and some female dogs raise a leg to urinate marking territory, identifying themselves to other dogs, or over-marking another dog’s scent. Also possibly due to a situation provoking anxiety.
Separation Anxiety
When your dog or puppy only urinates when left alone for a short time, he may have separation anxiety. Look for nervousness or being upset as you prepare to leave.
Submissive/Excitement Urination
During interactions, you may notice a display of submissive postures. Perhaps any or all of these: roll over onto back, duck or avoid eye contact, cower, cringe, cringe even flatten his ears.
Certain conditions like changes in routine, urinating during play, petting, and greeting, receiving a scolding or some other excitement. Another possibility when they are alone, out of sight, or just haven’t had a chance to relieve themselves outside or incompletely.
Preferred Location
A dog may prefer a specific location or surface when housed in a place for an extended period like concrete a kennel, a newspaper, or carpeting, newspaper, or the bottom of a cage.
Any Dog
Ensure your friend gets plenty of exercise and attention every day. It’s essential to be interactive with their mind and playing games like fetch for their body. This keeps them happy, busy, and too tired to be anxious or stressed when you are not around.
