It’s 2022, but we still hear stories about dogs experiencing abuse from humans in different parts of the world. These stories are always heartbreaking to hear, especially since these four-legged angels have the purest of hearts. Fortunately, some organizations rescue dogs from their abusers and shower them with love and care.
Hansel, a Pit Bull from Tilbury, Canada, was among the dogs that received help from one of these organizations. Unfortunately, aside from being used as a fighting dog, he was also placed on the kill list since Ontario placed a ban on Pit Bulls.
Rob Scheinberg, a concerned citizen, learned about Ontario’s decision. So he stood up for Hansel and the other dogs on the kill list. He spoke to the authorities and did everything he could to make the court reconsider its decision.
A twist of fate
Authorities listened to Scheinberg’s plea and halted the killing of the canines. They then tested the dogs to see which ones were okay for adoption. Those who passed the test were then sent to Dogs Playing For Life, a Florida-based non-profit organization. Hansel was among the dogs transferred to their organization.
The pooch was eventually adopted by the Throw Away Dogs Project in Philadelphia, where he was trained to become a K-9 officer. After a year’s worth of training, he was then turned over to the Millville Fire Department since they were looking for an arson detection dog at that time. This made Hansel the first Pit Bull to land a job as an arson detection K-9 officer!
Living his best life
Hansel was so dedicated to his work that he was awarded Law Enforcement and Detection Hero Dog in 2021. Because of him, other fire departments decided to save Pit Bulls from the kill list and hire them as arson detection dogs.
